History: since the 18th century, epaulets have been used to designate rank in the military. When aviation became accessible to public transportation, commercial airlines maintained this military style. Pan Am changed their uniforms to a more naval look in the 1930s, as their fleet was mainly consisted of seaplanes. All major airlines adopted this look for their uniform to arouse a sense of  trust and safety into people.
